Applications open for new editor for HHS online blog (histhum.com) and social media

The editors of international and interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal History of the Human Sciences (HHS) invite applications for a new editor of its online blog histhum.com

Histhum.com, under the previous editorships of Prof Des Fitzgerald (now professor at University College Cork, and HHS advisory board member), Dr Sarah Marks (now Senior Lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London, and current HHS editor), and then Dr Hannah Proctor (Research Fellow, University of Strathclyde, and current HHS advisory board member), has acted as a forum for discussion of the history of the human sciences outwith the published pages of the journal, and has published book reviews, interviews, and intellectual exchanges.

We are now searching for a new editor to:

  • Further develop histhum.com at a moment in which publication practices and social media are experiencing significant change and significant challenges. The new editor of histhum.com will have latitude and independence – in liaison with the editors of History of the Human Sciences – to develop and implement a distinctive vision for histhum.com
  • Propose, acquire, edit, and publish materials on histhum.com
  • Take responsibility for dissemination of material in History of the Human Sciences and histhum.com (using social and other media)
  • Attend regular editorial meetings for History of the Human Sciences

All work can be done remotely. Editorial meetings usually take place approximately every two months between 1000 and 1500 GMT and Histhum.com and HHS social media agenda items rarely take up more than 30 minutes. Applicants require a broad knowledge/understanding of the history of the human sciences, should be proficient in web-editing (WordPress site) and in the creative use of social media for academic material, and should have training in a discipline in the humanities and/or interpretive social sciences that is relevant for the history of the human sciences. It is likely applicants will have a relationship to the academy either in terms of a current or recent post (including being a doctoral candidate).

While the editor would have latitude in developing an approach for developing material for publication on histhum.com and a strategy for social media dissemination, the editors of HHS expect that there would be 8+ book reviews and/or other material published each year on histhum.com and weekly posts using social media (holiday periods excepted).

The position is for two years in the first instance and renewable beyond that, subject to discussions with the HHS editors.

Honorarium: £2,400 per year, paid at the start of the year

Deadline for applications: 9 March 2026, 1700 GMT

Application process: Please send to hhs@histhum.com (using the email title ‘HHS: Histhum editor application’) a 2-page (maximum) CV (which demonstrates your competency to take up this role) and a 1-page (maximum) brief written outline of how you envisage the development of histhum.com and HHS’s social media profile. Questions about the position can be addressed to HHS Editor-in-Chief Prof Felicity Callard (felicity.callard@glasgow.ac.uk). The journal anticipates responding to applicants by the end of March 2026.
